The incoming market trend for budgeting and group traveling is growing, but not by choice.
Our team found opportunity around the sudden onset trends for the group traveling market and its pain points, specifically in the scope of budgeting and early planning due to concern for economic instability and traveling inflation. We narrowed our user research around Millennial travelers, as they now continue to encompass over 35% of the global travel market.

Prototyping and Development
We constructed an ideal concept of a user flow that offered key features and solutions relative to the user’s journey map. During this part of our process, we went through numerous iterations of user flows to organize an optimal and easily navigable experience for a multi-user platform.
Journey Mapping
To gain insight around the difficulties of group traveling, we walked through a person’s journey from the initial action of considering a group trip until the end steps of going back home post-trip. We found that during the planning and mid-trip phases, groups would commonly disagree the most.
Initial discussions plans to travel
Disagreements about plans and budgeting
Excited to arrive and experience new things
Can’t decide what to do with free time
Satisfied with new memories and experiences

Mobile Design
While blocking our wireframes, we prioritized ease of information and accessibility over content to reduce clutter and promote user control. During our design process, we would conduct audits of our competitor apps to understand what system hierarchy has worked and what hasn’t.

Key Findings & Improvements
Prioritize Personal Budget-Tracking
Most users desired to have a personal budget plan to see how much they are personally spending and contributing to the group.
Add More Realistic Interactions for ‘Memories’
When prompted to take a photo, the user understood how but did not know where the photo went after it was taken. To fix this, we simulated a polaroid shutter effect to clarify ‘saving’ the photo.
Simpler ‘Itinerary’ Screen
The ‘itinerary’ is the first screen the user sees when opening their trip. Originally, we had over 5+ different elements for the user to interact with. By simplifying the UI, the user had more confidence navigating the itinerary screen.
Clarify the Onboarding Process
During the test, users took longer time to understand what next steps to take during the onboarding process. Visual clarity and subtitles were recommended suggestions.
Choose Faves with Itinerary Voting
Come to an agreement by voting on where to go and what to do! Itinerary offers a trip guide and interactive activity map that highlights ratings, costs, and routes.

Split the Checks with Budgeting
Monitor your budget on both a group and individual level! Stay informed before, during, and after trips on who’s paying what and how much the group can spend.
Think Fast with Polls
Decide what’s up next for you and your friends with a quick and easy poll! Anonymous voting offers both fairness and clarity while making choices on the go.

Save Moments with Memories
Effortlessly capture and share well-timed shots or priceless experiences via in-app camera, accessible to users via widget, notification, or global navigation.

Reflection
As an avid hiker and travel enthusiast, I was glad to get behind a project that I was passionate about. Group travel is never easy and I’m even one to admit that I prefer solo-travel at any chance I get. However, while conversing with users about their anxieties with group travel, I learned that many people share the same negative experience around the topic. From there, I concluded that not only was WeRoam designing a solution for current group travelers, but encouraging solo-travelers to re-consider bringing along a plus one.

Travel is always better together.
